Bring at least four other yarns, including some that are fuzzy (mohair, chenille, angora) and some with sparkles or glitz; novelty yarns are good. Most of these can be remnants as small as several yards long. Yarn should be worsted or dk weight, but thinner yarns can be combined to make the appropriate thickness. Feel free to bring extra to exchange and share with classmates. A pair of short needles (dpns work well, though they don't have to be) in size 6,7, or 8. The same size (6, 7, or 8) 16-inch circular needles. At least one G or H crochet hook; additional sizes are useful if you have them. The circle(s) you made for homework. Optional: any embellishments you'd like to incorporate (beads, buttons, etc.) The usual supply kit with scissors, tapestry needle, paper and pen for notes, etc. NOTE: It's OK to bring only hooks or needles if you only do one or the other.
Description: People are fascinated by colors that spin! These three techniques (some better for crocheting, others for knitting) create eddies of color that swirl around to create startlingly beautiful textiles. Learn to choose colors and fibers that harmonize well, blending into a cohesive fabric. A good introduction to freeform, you will learn a routine or pattern for stitches, allowing you to improvise freely with color and texture. What to do with them when they're finished? We'll learn how they can be made into hats, bags, rugs and more; or decorative free-form wall hangings. Learn to make your colors spin!

Textures are easily obtainable, colors may be taken more advantage of, and patterning is more accessible. Novelty yarns are handled better, less yarn might be used, gorgeous but uncomfortable fibers need not touch your skin, and stretching can be minimized. Learn: * The "up/down" method of applying a separate yarn onto knits, * the "in/out" method of applying a separate yarn onto knits, * the slip stitch method of the same yarn as a "weft" thread, * vertical weaves, color weaves, smocking weaves, and much more.
