Morning Session: The Dollars and Sense of Being a Published Author with Jean Leinhauser and Rita Weiss

Have you secretly (or openly) dreamed of having a book published with your name on the cover as the author? Here you will learn all of the pluses and minuses of having your book published, and the names of the publishers who are publishing both knit and crochet books along with their requirements and the names of their editors. Learn how to make a proposal, what your contract should contain, about working with an editor, working with an agent and how to publicize your book once it has been published.

If you do not relish working with an existing publisher, learn about self publishing and publishing on demand. How much will it cost and how much will you earn?

Even if you've never dreamed of being a published author, you'll be fascinated with what is involved in getting a book published. The seminar will be led by Jean and Rita, who between them have over 100 books published by many different publishers all over the map.

Afternoon Roundtable Discussions:

1. Vashti Braha, Designing Trendy Crochet - The trend in crochet designing is: trendy crochet! We'll focus on fashion, home decor and the bigger picture in trendspotting: what's in style now, what's going to be in style and how to find and use this information for your crochet designs. Plenty of hard-earned practical tips and helpful resources provided. Even if you favor the timeless classics, it's easy to inject a little--if not a lot of--zeitgeist.

2. Robyn Chachula, How to Join the "In" Crowd - For aspiring designers on getting published, hear Robyn talk about her experiences of going from crafter to designer as well as some of her colleagues' paths. Discuss what to include in your proposal that will help get you noticed by editors and publishers and what not to include in proposals that will surely never get you the job, plus basic tips to help you join the "In Crowd".

3. Lily Chin, Meet The Press--How to get Publicity for Your Business - Want to bring in new converts for your business? Do you need more publicity to let the general public know you exist? Get to know the many, various ways of playing the PR game. Learn how to write an effective press release. Find out how to get free advertising. Try out good sound-bites. See how easy it is to garner lots of attention from a real expert. Lily is a masterful media-monger and will share all her secrets of how she got onto national broadcast talk shows like David Letterman and Caroline Rhea, on national broadcast and cable news like CBS and CNN, on local news across the country (over 20 appearances in 2004 alone), on cable shows like HGTV and Lifetime's Handmade by Design and DIY's Knitty Gritty as well as Jewelry Making (not to mention the Carol Duvall show), on radio programs like the BBC and KPFA public radio and in dozens of newspapers across the country and Canada (NY Times, Dallas Morning News, Denver Post, Oakland Tribune, Chicago Tribune, Toronto Star) as well as national papers (USA Today and the Sunday Funnies!) and magazines (Time).

4. Edie Eckman, Designing for Publication - Learn what publishers and editors want from you, the designer. Find out how to submit your ideas for publication and how to follow through with a finished product that will make them want to work with you again.

5. Jennifer Hansen, Self Publishing Your Crochet Designs - Join Jennifer of Stitch Diva Studios as she discusses what it takes to profitably publish your crochet designs. Topics to be discussed will include: turning your design into quality instructions, publication mediums, distribution channels and product marketing.

6. Susan Lowman, Contract Crocheting (From an Editor/Designer's Perspective) - Do you have what it takes to become an excellent contract crocheter? Do you know what to do (and most importantly, what not to do) when working with designers and editors? How do you get started, find clients and schedule your time to meet the deadline? Come and learn how to be a top-notch contract crocheter who will be hired again and again by designers and editors. Susan shares her secrets for being a great contract crocheter from the eyes of a designer/technical editor.

7. Sharon Mann, Crochet as Art - This session discusses "What is crochet art?" Samples of artists' work and techniques will be discussed, how to apply for grants through state art councils, and how to organize an art show in a local museum or art gallery.

8. Mary Beth Temple, Book Proposal 101 - With the caveat that she won't go into legal contractual matters for obvious reasons, Mary Beth thought it might be interesting to go over the basics of a book proposal and a timeline of how it all goes. Special attention will be paid to jargon like "platform" or "escalation", how to decide whether to use an agent or not and what the pieces of a proposal should be.

9. Myra Wood, How to Self Publish Your Own Book - Find out what it takes to produce a book on your own. Myra gives you an overview of what it takes to self publish from developing a basic outline to printing and marketing.

10. Vicki Blizzard and Kathleen Sams of Coats & Clark, The Business of Crochet - Crochet has been a hobby of yours for years, but now you're wondering if you can use it as a way to generate income. During this open discussion session, we would like to give you some food for thought about how to make extra income using your crochet skills in ways you may not have thought about. Bring your ideas and we will open up the discussion to everyone for concepts on generating crochet income.
