Nothing is more attractive than or as versatile as damask patterning for walls and other architectural surfaces. We are often asked by designers, homeowners and restaurateurs for overall damask finishes. In this class you will learn a multitude of options for layout and design key to achieving that sought-after professional look. Six portfolio samples will be rendered in traditional stencil paint mediums, metallics and dimensional materials using a number of techniques and a variety of applicators. For whatever your reason, business of pleasure, this class will give you the tools to inspire your imagination and creativity.

Spend an inspiring day learning the in's and out's of painted stones and marbles. We will produce one large panel featuring Siennese Yellow and Rouge Royal marbles while also creating smaller samples featuring Vert-Vert and Napoleon marbles as well as Tortoise Shell, Granite and other surprises. We will focus on brush, sponge and various techniques that can be applied to any stone and marble effects that you may like to replicate. We will practice other marble and stone decorative options such as limestone and travertine. Don't fret about supplies; you can borrow from me if necessary. (But it would be great if you had a Badger brush!)

Using the latest in earth-friendly coatings manufactured in Canada, you will learn the basic application of various lime products. Everyone will be given a step-by- step product knowledge on the different types of material plus understanding terms like marmorino, travertine, etc. Products used will be the following: stucco marmo (smooth venetian), marmorino (polished stone), lime paint, coccio pesto (lime with terra rock), travertino, waxes, metallics and specialty primers. Take home eight 16" x 16" boards. Also get a basic understanding why these finishes are GREEN and the major selling features. Immerse yourself in wonderful woods for a day! We will create one large panel featuring insets of Bird's-Eye Maple and Heart Grain Pine with Mahogany bordering. We will also produce smaller samples focusing on Burl Wood, Walnut, Pickled Oak, Poplar, and we'll see what else. The techniques we learn will give you the ability to recreate most any other style of wood you like. Focus will be on two and three layer wood effects from base grain to overglazing showing more effects of light. Learn improvised tools such as matchbooks and fingers, beer glaze, powdered pigments and more.

Working with tadelakt is a bit like the Peace Corps--the toughest job you'll ever love. A stunning lime finish with one mean learning curve! The first day will be spent discussing modern substrates and working up two pieces of tadelakt on cement board. The following morning we will finish soaping and polishing up the previous day's efforts and make a final piece of tadelakt for engraving a sgrafitto element. This is a challenging workshop with commensurately beautiful results.

This unusual technique is perhaps the most economic and ecological form of painting and stenciling that I know. It was taught to me by Mongiardino's Master decorative painters. It is a subtractive technique: starting with a pigment-coated surface, a pattern is developed by removing areas exposed through stencil achieving various color shades. Appropriate for works on wood and paper grounds. We will paint two very detailed stencil borders with wood inlays, one large border in Italian marble, one panel with landscape all done in wood inlays from a 1500's era church choir and one panel with Serpentino marble inlay.

This class will explore your creative side by teaching you exciting ways to mix plasters to create stunning finishes that are both beautiful and sellable. Finishes will range from Old World finishes to distressed marble and the modern sleek finishes that are in great demand in the market today. We will be using ADICOLOR's lime-based plasters such as Marmorino, Mazaar, synthetic plasters, Stucco Antico and beautiful metallic plasters that will wow your designers. We will complete six 18 x 20 samples on masonite boards. Keep a stencil. We will also incorporate Modellos creating the embedded plaster looks.

These techniques come from the oldest Italian fresco painters who needed to be fast and effective. It was taught to Lucretia also by Mongiardino's Master painters. No more worry about imitating natural stone cluster marble type! Suited for all levels. On a sponged water base acrylic soft background, we print stone-shaped cut paper and add a little bit of definition and marble veining finishing the piece really fast. Produce three samples on canvas and board 12” x 18” with Porta Santa, Breccia Verde, Giallo Antico and St. Anne and will also demonstrate one Reverse Print with the Florentine.

Modern Japanese paintings offer new techniques for your work. You will produce a sophisticated silver leaf surface (or gold leaf) as you blend colors. The combination of waves and bird is a traditional composition in a Japanese mural. This painting can also be used to create beautiful screens. In this class we will explore the possibilities that acrylic paint offers. Yaeko will also be very happy to share some of her experience regarding the business side of decorative painting. In addition to producing this panel, you will get the square grid and bird stencil used in class. You will also have the possibility to purchase other interesting Japanese stencil (KATAGAMI) during class ($10-$80).
