T109-Persian Carpet Panels

Almost too good for floors! Think walls, furniture and fabrics too. This project gives a grounding in stenciling using paint, metal leaf and corner techniques. You will measure, mask and color the panel following instruction but leave room for artistic license. The class sample will be created in a suitcase friendly size onto canvas. A full size stencil set will be mailed to students after convention. Both sets are included, retail value $250. Also, receive photo notes and mitre tool. This Ottoman inspired panel lends itself to many classic and contemporary interpretations, once you know how.

This class will make between 6 and 8 samples which show you many different ways to combine metallic foils with a wide variety of textured materials. Learn advanced yet easy usage of the metallic foils by layering them first, in the middle, or at the end of your designs. All designs have a minimum amount of steps involved so they are fast to execute, at a low cost point to the client and profitable to you.

Learn how to miter border corners with 100% precision. Borders will have a beautiful mirror-image and you will gain confidence that you can do this every time! The secret to perfection lies in preparation and measuring before you start the project! The class will use a border stencil and learn how opposite corners will always match. Create beautiful high-end "green" finishes without the high-end material cost using Earth Colors of Provence simple eco-friendly product line, Natural Earth Pigments, direct from the French Quarries in Provence, EcoPlaster, EcoWax and EcoPaste. Tint different mediums, and make your own glaze and stain using Natural Earth Pigments, boiled linseed oil, beer, and glaze. Incorporate color layers and embedded stencils into EcoPlaster. Techniques used are Polished Plaster, Antique Plaster and Provence Plaster. Students will receive a Natural Earth Pigment Kit with 18 colors ($68 value). Through this class you will learn the entire process of mold making-from sculpting in clay, (for class purposes we'll sculpt a leaf), to mixing mold components, to making a mother mold and casting a plaster piece from your mold. This class will enable you to make a mold from any object you want to cast, in order to create a unique wall finish for your client. We will also be making a Northwest Base Relief finish using plaster pieces made in advance so that you can learn how to apply the plaster pieces to a wall. You will take home your finished 16" X 24" Northwest Base Relief sample board,( I will be supplying all the plaster pieces to apply to your sample board) your mold, your sculpted leaf, a leaf stencil and detailed notes-plus lots of other pertinent information to get you well on your way of learning the 18th century artisan's skill of becoming a Stuccadore'!

F601-Decorative Techniques for Gilded Surfaces

Learn several truly beautiful and historically correct methods for decorating gilded surfaces. The techniques learned are useful to create exquisite high and quality decoration for furniture, frames and panels, and as a starting point to learn techniques useful in antique restoration. Students will work on two small sample boards that will be supplied already gilded. The materials used will be Casein paint, shellac, silicone moulding materials, and plaster of Paris.

Venetian Red, 3. Spanish Tile, 4. Tuscany. 5. Carrara Marble 6. Gun Metal Concrete. Using a Venetian trowel we will apply two simple layers of EZ-ONE overlay with different colors mixed in to the cement to give an Italian Plaster and stone effects. You will learn surface prep, mixing, application techniques and learn about the different sealers for the verity job and surfaces.

Tadelakt is a PITA. It is slow, laborious and time-consuming. It is also magical, one of the most beautiful finishes imaginable. We will start with a discussion on lime history and chemistry. Then, onto the hard work. Tadelakt is one continuous smoothing and polishing operation. For hours. On our second piece of tadelakt, we will stencil, pounce and carve a sgrafitto element. Students will be given a polishing stone with which to soap the tadelakt the following day. A long class, and now you've got homework.

We will work with just two different types of plaster that can be modified in a number of ways by intermixing and adding aggregates and tinted wax layers. By adding stencils into the mix we will greatly expand our decorative options by incorporating inlaid patterns with Stencil Impressions(TM), unique embossing techniques, soft wax treatments, metallic foil and more. Create a sample panel in casein paint using the soft colours of Florentine ornament. Learn one of the historical motifs common in historical decoration, a repeat foliate ornament, or rinceaux. The teacher will illustrate how this flexible design element can be used to create a door surround, a decorative panel or a repeat border. Stencils and hand painting will be used to illustrate simple and more complex applications for the same motif. The course teaches a unique technique for creating a textured plaster base on canvas, useful for artists who wish to work in the studio then install on site.

Cloudscapes can be painted as beautiful soaring ceilings on their own, or as the base for grand ceiling murals. In this intensive workshop you will learn techniques for painting decorative cloud ceilings that are colorful and surprisingly fast to produce. We ll explore various aspects of good design such as composing cloudscapes of different shapes and sizes to suit the proportions of the ceiling, and creating color palettes for tailoring the mural to the room and its decor. Students will design and paint two unique 36" by 60" ceilings.

On each board they practice guilding, glazing, sanding, and other techniques. This is not a certification class.
