Thursday · 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM (includes break from Noon to 1:30 PM) Fee: $290.00 Instructor: Helen Morris, The Stencil Library Almost too good for floors! Think walls, furniture and fabrics too. This project gives a grounding in stenciling using paint, metal leaf and corner techniques. You will measure, mask and color the panel following instruction but leave room for artistic license. The class sample will be created in a suitcase friendly size onto canvas. A full size stencil set will be mailed to students after convention. Both sets are included, retail value $250. Also, receive photo notes and mitre tool. This Ottoman inspired panel lends itself to many classic and contemporary interpretations, once you know how.

Learn advanced yet easy usage of the metallic foils by layering them first, in the middle, or at the end of your designs. Tint different mediums, and make your own glaze and stain using Natural Earth Pigments, boiled linseed oil, beer, and glaze. Incorporate color layers and embedded stencils into EcoPlaster. The techniques learned are useful to create exquisite high and quality decoration for furniture, frames and panels, and as a starting point to learn techniques useful in antique restoration. These finishes are most appropriate as furniture details, or on "objects," but they can also be enlarged and used for larger surfaces in a theatrical manner, such as walls. We will apply a ground of dutch metal(composition) leaf under the gold tortoise shell. The finishes will be done on separate panels, or combined, as appropriate. Samples may be 20"x 24" or smaller.

It is also magical, one of the most beautiful finishes imaginable. We will start with a discussion on lime history and chemistry. Then, onto the hard work. Tadelakt is one continuous smoothing and polishing operation. For hours. On our second piece of tadelakt, we will stencil, pounce and carve a sgrafitto element. Students will be given a polishing stone with which to soap the tadelakt the following day. A long class, and now you've got homework.

Using the latest in earth-friendly coatings manufactured in Canada, you will learn the basic application of various lime products. Everyone will be given a step-by-step product knowledge on the different types of material plus understanding terms like marmorino, travertine, etc. Products used will be the following: stucco marmo (smooth venetian), marmorino (polished stone), lime paint, coccio pesto (lime with terra rock), travertino, waxes, metallics and specialty primers. Take home eight 16" x 16" boards. Also get a basic understanding why these finishes are GREEN and the major selling features. Every student who takes this class will receive a stencil at no charge.

This hands-on class for color mixing and matching is designed for artisans in the decorative painting field who work with broad areas of color. Learn how to use pigments to adjust paints, glazes and plaster colors on the spot or before the commission. Learn a fool-proof method for choosing colors that will work in a glaze. Students will come away with a completed, eight page color kit and samples for matching and making colors with basic pigments. Each student will also receive a complete manual covering all the activities in the class and a color wheel. Signed copies of Dean's book, The Keys to Color, will be available for sale during class.

They will learn hands on proper ways of flat gilding on walls & ceilings. They will learn to make mosaics with gold leaf, gild through a stencil, paint trompe l'eoil on leaf, stencil on gold leaf and learn the EASY way to apply broken leaf effects. Also students will learn the proper ways to approach a room (wall or ceiling) with every sample board made. Also technical knowledge of materials such as leaf, varnishes, sizes and proper paints used for gilding.

Students will create one 26" x 37" mural on roc-lon cloth using water-based acrylics and each will receive the crane stencil.
