TH102-Snowy Egret Faux Stained Glass Window With Theorem

In this class you create a "faux" stained glass window using acrylic paints and glazes on a 22" x 22" piece of MPC, an alternative to canvas. The background sky is created using the cross hatching method. Stained glass panels will be stenciled, and using the ragging method, glaze will be applied to create the translucent look of glass. The center round panel is stenciled using a four layer design of a large Snowy Egret from Red Lion Stencils. Shading, highlighting and feathers will be added and enhanced using decorative painting techniques. This class features five different painting styles.

TH117-Reverse Stenciling

This unusual technique is perhaps the most economic and ecological form of painting and stenciling that I know. It was taught to me by Mongiardino's Master decorative painters. It is a subtractive technique: starting with a pigment-coated surface, a pattern is developed by removing areas exposed through stencil achieving various color shades. Appropriate for works on wood and paper grounds. We will paint two very detailed stencil borders with wood inlays, one large border in Italian marble, one panel with landscape all done in wood inlays from a 1500's era church choir and one panel with Serpentino marble inlay.

Modern Japanese paintings offer new techniques for your work. You will produce a sophisticated silver leaf surface (or gold leaf) as you blend colors. The combination of waves and bird is a traditional composition in a Japanese mural. This painting can also be used to create beautiful screens. In this class we will explore the possibilities that acrylic paint offers. Yaeko will also be very happy to share some of her experience regarding the business side of decorative painting. These techniques come from the oldest Italian fresco painters who needed to be fast and effective. It was taught to Lucretia also by Mongiardino's Master painters. No more worry about imitating natural stone cluster marble type! Suited for all levels. On a sponged water base acrylic soft background, we print stone-shaped cut paper and add a little bit of definition and marble veining finishing the piece really fast. Produce three samples on canvas and board 12” x 18” with Porta Santa, Breccia Verde, Giallo Antico and St. Anne and will also demonstrate one Reverse Print with the Florentine.

We will focus on brush, sponge and various techniques that can be applied to any stone and marble effects that you may like to replicate. Immerse yourself in wonderful woods for a day! We will create one large panel featuring insets of Bird's-Eye Maple and Heart Grain Pine with Mahogany bordering. The techniques we learn will give you the ability to recreate most any other style of wood you like. Focus will be on two and three layer wood effects from base grain to overglazing showing more effects of light. Working with tadelakt is a bit like the Peace Corps--the toughest job you'll ever love. A stunning lime finish with one mean learning curve! The following morning we will finish soaping and polishing up the previous day's efforts and make a final piece of tadelakt for engraving a sgrafitto element.
