Susan Bickford
Susan Bickford Singing Walls www.singingwalls.com
|
| Susan Bickford, owner and principal artist of Susan Bickford Singing Walls, Nashville, TN, started her business in 1999 after a long detour into the world of corporate government and public affairs. Laine Discepoli
Miss Elaineous Studio www.misselaineous.net
|
| Laine Discepoli has been painting for as long as she can remember. After earning a marketing degree from Bentley College in Boston, she went on to enjoy a 15 year career in Advertising. However, her passion was truly in the arts and she spent free time experimenting with paint on walls and handmade crafts as Miss Elaineous "just for fun." When the fun showed promise of big business, she made it official in 2000 and never looked back on corporate life. Laine and business partner/husband John then fulfilled a life long dream of opening a studio in 2004. Her teaching theme would be considered "empowerment" and believes that with true passion - great art can be achieved (the skills and techniques can be learned!) Classes are informative and entertaining covering special interest finishes, business, product knowledge and more. Miss Elaineous is an Adicolor and Proceed System boutique offering a variety of tools for the discriminating finisher.
Laine uses her business savvy and marketing background as the power behind her artistic passion. As a busy mother of 14 year old twins, she understands the struggle that so many finishers have balancing family and faux. She speaks freely about tricks and tools of the trade that experience has taught her - from products to techniques to time management. She is down to earth, intensely creative and believes that "we create our own luck", as supported by her success. She built her business from the ground up and within only five years, replaced her corporate salary. In addition to her own studio, Laine has been an invited teacher at various decorative painting forums including SALI (now IDAL), The Decorative Arts Show and classes at Master Finishing Studio in Houston, TX.
Miss Elaineous has consistently won 1st and 2nd place awards annually at the Cincinnati Homearama since 2002. Laine's work has been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles including "Housetrends", and most recently she was selected as a contributor in Designer Faux Finishing, the new book by Victor DiMasi. Cindy Everett

| Cindy Everett, of Olive Branch, MS owns and operates Designer Faux Finishes Studio. Cindy took her business full-time in 2000, and strives to stay on the cutting edge of new products and techniques. From her studio, she has developed many of her own custom furniture finishes. Through creative experimentation, Cindy has taken her original furniture finishes and applied them to cabinetry. She is at the top of her game, is considered the "Cabinet Queen" among her peers in the industry and is highly sought after by her clientele. Though Cindy initially pursued a career in the accounting field, she gave up her executive career to pursue her true passion and devote herself full time to her love of art. Her interest in decorative arts began at a very young age. She was only 12 when she was commissioned to paint animated doughnut people on the glass façade of a local doughnut shop. In her early twenties she owned and operated a part-time arts and crafts business with her mother creating hand-painted clothing and home decor. It was then that Cindy started re-vamping old garage sale furniture finds. Cindy has combined her love of painted furniture with a successful career as a faux finish artist, decorator, entrepreneur and teacher, specializing in furniture finishing and kitchen cabinet remodeling. Cindy has trained extensively with industry masters throughout her faux career.
Cindy is a member of the International Decorative Artisans League, The Atrium Online, Sisters Hands Decorative Artists Consortium, as well as serving as a moderator on Murals Plus, the internet's most active decorative arts message board. Judy Minter
www.judyminter.com
|
| Judy Minter works in a variety of media, including faux finishes, photography, Papier Mâché, painted ceramics and sterling silver jewelry. She earned BA and MA degrees in Art and photography from California State University, Long Beach, AA degrees in Interior Design and Architecture from College of DuPage, near Chicago, Illinois. Judy has been a photographer for McDonnell Douglass Corporation, Instructor of Photography at College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and owned a working studio since 1982. She has taught workshops in faux and decorative painting in Northern California, Chicago, and the Inland Northwest. Philosophy: I am inspired by a quote from Danny Kaye: “Life is a huge canvas, and we should put as much color on it as possible.” My creations are usually whimsical and humorous, or technically inspiring. Helen Morris
The Stencil Library www.stencil-library.com
|
| Born in Singapore, Helen spent her childhood in various countries. She went to a proper English boarding school where she developed an inventive approach to art, drama and rule bending. She had decided that when she grew up she would either be a world famous movie star or a world famous fashion designer, but that was because she had never owned a stencil set as a child. If she had, it would not have taken twenty-eight years before Helen realized that she was going to be a stenciler. Her company, The Stencil Library, is twenty two years old this fall; it was by happy accident that Helen was there at the birth. She had just finished appearing in her first movie, the role was tiny but it was a good start. Stencils were far from her mind. Helen's husband was a graphic designer; he made and used stencils in his work. She made a chance discovery that the British public might be in need of his stencil designing skills, and it set them both on a new adventure. Their first 250 stencils were designed by Chips, Helen's husband. She hand cut every one of them with a surgical scalpel. The completed collection was brought to the public's attention by some wonderful praise in World of Interiors and Elle Decoration magazine, the two UK decorating bibles of the time. The demand for their style of stencils was higher than they had anticipated. In addition, publishers wanted them to stencil room sets for their books and magazines, customers wanted their homes stenciled, television programs wanted Helen to demonstrate what could be done with this wonder tool. People wanted to take classes. Helen had to learn to stencil. That was the beginning. Chips has now designed around four thousand stencils. Helen taught herself to stencil and has since shared her techniques with countless people through workshops, writing, lectures and television in both Europe and America. She is said to be a leading expert on her subject. The Stencil Library is now well respected worldwide, a tiny company with a big reputation. Helen will be delighted to share more of the story with you at Convention this year. Jeff Raum
Jeff Raum Stencils
|
| When Jeff Raum's kindergarten teacher wrote a note to his mom saying that he had talent and should be encouraged, he knew that he had found his calling. He won a national poster competition in first grade and three of his paintings were displayed at the Baltimore Museum of Art that same year. In eighth grade, he became the youngest person ever to win the National Plastercraft Competition. Jeff's long string of charmed art achievements came to an abrupt end when he was exposed to the college art arena. He was unhappy with how the professors looked down their noses at realism. He formed a professional fraternity, Alpha Gamma Tao and started student meetings to discuss what was needed for a satisfactory commercial design program. Jeff presented his findings to the dean and facility, and in his senior year, the new program was implemented. After he graduated with a B.F.A. in commercial design, the entire art faculty was fired. In 1983, Jeff began his career as a medical illustrator for hospitals. He soon tired of creating images of diseased organs and moved to Manhattan to work as a scenic artist for 3-D animated TV commercials, eventually being promoted to art director. When creating art to sell product grew tiring as well, he moved on to Broadway, spending three years as a make-up designer for the productions of I'm Not Rappaport and Into The Woods. Wanting to leave the frantic energy of New York behind, Jeff moved to Los Angeles. Unable to get into the scenic artists union, he began his own decorative painting business, Muracles. His clients include Gucci, the Las Vegas Hilton, the Luxor, and Macy's. In 1998, Jeff began his stencil line, Jeff Raum Stencils, after the overwhelming response of SALI members to an article in the Artistic Stenciler. Jan Dressler became familiar with Jeff's work and recommended him to appear on "The Christopher Lowell Show" and Jeff went on to appear in eight episodes. Jeff currently is a part-time instructor of Interior Design at Moorpark College. His work has been published in Better Homes and Gardens and Traditional Home magazines as well as an Italian book on stenciling. Jeff is featured in the book Mural Painting Secrets for Success by Gary Lord Classes offered at IDAL 2010 Convention & Expo: S305-Statue in Niche SN213-Oriental Crane

| Lynne Rutter Murals and Decorative Painting www.lynnerutter.com
Decorative artist Lynne Rutter is on a mission to wipe out plain white ceilings and rescue banal interiors with beauty, color, and a little bit of gold leaf here and there! A widely recognized muralist with over 25 years of professional experience as a decorative painter, she runs a prosperous business based in San Francisco, with commissions throughout the U.S. Lynne studied architecture and design at the University of California at Berkeley, graduating with a degree in fine art. She furthered her training by working as a scenic artist, and by apprenticing with some of the leading decorative painters in the country. For over four years she managed a large successful mural studio, where she coordinated the production of commercial murals for national and international installations. In 1990, Lynne Rutter founded her own atelier, with a mission to "create custom fine art murals and super-fussy ornament, the kind you have to do by hand, and that you want to look at up-close" and she has since become well-known for her ornamental ceilings, fine art murals, chinoiserie, surreal-scale figurative murals, and a fearless use of color. Recent commissions include murals for two public libraries, the Westin St. Francis Hotel, and the home of Barbra Streisand.
Lynne's lifelong interest in period design led her to work on many important historic buildings and she has participated in the restoration of painted ornament in churches and civic buildings, as well as in Victorian and period-revival homes. Adorning a previously barren space with historic-inspired murals and ornament has become one of Lynne Rutter's signature looks, and her work has been featured in numerous national design magazines and books on interior design.
Throughout her career Lynne has taught workshops and trained apprentices, and has mentored many of her assistants into successful careers of their own. Classes offered at IDAL 2010 Convention & Expo: S102-Ornamental Borders SN201-Painterly Cloud Ceilings

Jean Sable
www.jean-sable.com
|
| My early passion for decorative painting goes back a long way in previous generations of my family, and it is because of this cultural heritage that I naturally took to and progressed in painting techniques.
During 1984-1985, I studied at and graduated from the Flemish Master School Clement VAN DER KELEN in Brussels.I was a freelance Decorative Artist from 1986 and have carried out many internal decorations to satisfy the various requirements of private, commercial, theatrical or event-based decoration.
In 2000, I was awarded winner of the Gold Medal Competition for the “Best Craftsman in France” which is the highest award of its kind that can be achieved for decorative painting. This was presented to me by the French government in the year 2000.
At the same time as carrying out my professional obligations of decorative works of art, I have taught my art to professional painters from the "Chambre de Métiers" and in several art schools in Paris.Since 1990, more than 800 students have been taught by me in all the disciplines of mural art, and some of them work with me today.
This long experience of teaching art combined with an expert knowledge of all the techniques involved from construction to decoration, naturally led me to start my own school, in the year 2003, the SABLE SCHOOL in VERSAILLES.
Appointed as “Expert” at the Versailles Court of Appeal, I operate closely with magistrates and lawyers by giving my expertise on matters relating to disorders, defects or litigations concerning interior decorative and artistic finishes.
Permanent member of the “SALON” (an international association of Decorative Artists), I will be hosting and organizing the event to mark the XVth anniversary of it, which is to take place in Versailles in the year 2010. Jon Sunde
The Jon Sunde Studio www.jonsunde.com
|
| Jon is a stucco mason. He began painting houses in ‘94 for a benevolent and kindly man who taught him the trade. He opened his own shop in ‘99 and was immediately not very successful.
Enough was earned however, that through a combination of meager diet and substandard accommodation, he was able to spend 4 ½ months at some of the world’s finest trade schools; from the Day Studio Workshop in San Francisco to the IPEDEC in Paris, even if it meant sometimes staying in a van down by the river.
While in France, Jon heard about Philippe Chastel and knew that a pilgrimage was called for. A journey involving train, bus and automobile was necessary to reach the small, medieval village of Ciran. There Philippe taught him the rudiments of antique stucco work, a life-altering experience.
But before he could leave the village, an evil spell was cast over him. Now he can only talk about lime, stucco and wood lath, much to the chagrin of both his wife and apprentice Simon. Classes offered at IDAL 2010 Convention & Expo: S611-Intro to Tadelakt

| Ellie van Dijken-Ellis is the owner of Elite Artistry, LLC. She has been in business since 1995 and has worked primarily on the Oregon Coast and recently in the Portland area. She is a member of the Cascadian Artisans Guild—the IDAL chapter for Oregon and Washington. Ellie's background is in the theater. She began her studies in Quebec, Canada, and traveled on to Europe where she developed and refined her own style. After many years, she returned to the U.S. and majored in set design, costuming and directing. She left the theater and eventually went into business for herself and created Elite Artistry, LLC. She has done commercial and residential work applying her own unique style and attention to detail to establish a strong customer base and referral network. Ellie has also established a relationship with the regionally-owned Miller Paint Stores and has been teaching faux finishing classes using Modern Masters products from Modern Masters retail line. Ellie’s teaching skills are based on many years of teaching children’s theater throughout the US and Europe. She makes her classes fun and educational, and her students walk away with newly-learned skills they can apply in their own work. Ellie and her business, Elite Artistry, LLC are also a Modern Masters Platinum Training Center. Hers is the newest and only Platinum Training Center in Oregon. She is excited about offering these classes to the Portland area because of Portland’s desire to be known as a “green” city and the Platinum product line’s reputation for being green. Ellie is one of a very few decorative wall finishers who does hand-sculpted plaster relief. This is a lost art. Ellie received her inspiration for this type of work while living in Europe for seven years and being surrounded by plaster relief in various buildings. She fell in love with type of craftsmanship and has been studying it for years. Despite her extensive searching for schools or teachers, she ultimately had to rely on her own research to learn this craft, (the craftsmen who originally did this work were called stuccadores). She also has taken ideas from the Jefferson Building Library of Congress, which is her favorite building in America. She makes her own molds and with her skill and talent can create true elegance in clients’ homes. Classes offered at IDAL 2010 Convention & Expo: T604-Rubber Mold Making and Plaster Bas Reliefs

Nicola attended the specialized Liceo Artistitico which focuses on perspective, architectural rendering, still life and figure drawing and sculpture. He continued his studies at the University of Rome in Art-History and Philosophy and completed internships in restoration in Assisi and in other historical locations in Umbria. Nicola transferred to the University of Paris and began his career in decorative painting at the Institute Superieure de Peintre Decorative in Paris (IPEDEC) where he studied under two of the most respected names in the industry, Yannick Guegan and Christian Martincourt.
In March of 1987, Nicola moved to Seattle, Washington and took on jobs with decorative painters broadening his skills. After a short time, he was working for himself. "One of my first major jobs was a 35,000 square foot home which kept me going for a year and a half. This job allowed me to create one of my icons that I call The Cellar, a trompe l'oeil piece done on a wall of an actual cellar, which gave the illusion of another cellar leading away from the one you were actually standing in." Nicola eventually began working for Vandelae Studios as the head instructor for advanced workshops. Nicola and his wife Leslie began Vigini Studios, Inc. 1998 and both continue contracting and teaching in the US and abroad.
Leslie Morrison Vigini was raised in San Antonio, Texas. Her love of architecture, antiquities and finishes began at an early age while growing up in the Texas Hill Country. After receiving a double major from Pine Manor College in Boston in Art History with an emphasis on Textiles and French with honors and completing summer Art-History programs at Harvard and Deree College, Athens, Greece, Leslie moved to Manhattan to attend the Cooper Hewitt Program, accredited through Parsons School of Design, completing a two year Masters in Decorative Arts program in NY and Paris. During this time she met Ina Marx of The Finishing School and began her career in faux finishing.
After graduation Leslie moved to Europe for eight years to live in The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Greece and England where she practiced and instructed the craft of decorative finishes. Upon returning to her native Texas in 1995, Leslie worked in a studio in Houston and three years later began Vigini Studios, Inc. and Vigini Paint & Decorating with Nicola. George Zaffle
www.zaffle.com
|
| Born in Chicago and raised in Cleveland, George Zaffle completed degrees in journalism and foreign language at Ohio University before coming upon his true calling as a decorative painter. Following graduation in 1981, he headed west to California on his bicycle. En route he met Larry Boyce, a fellow bicyclist and one of the world's top decorative painters (whom the New York Times called "the best stenciled in America"). Mr. Zaffle cycled throughout the Western states learning the trade from Boyce as they ornamented and stenciled grand rooms along the way hearkening back to the itinerant decorative painters of the 19th century. Becoming passionate about decorative painting, Zaffle went on to study and master other techniques such as trompe l'oeil, muraling, painted marbles and woods, true fresco, gilding, Old World cabinetry finishes, plaster effects, etc. He served apprenticeships with several master painters and worked on the restoration of many public and private buildings. He attended the Van der Kelen School in Brussels, Belgium, widely considered the finest school of decorative painting in the world. Their work appeared on the Today Show and Evening Magazine as well as in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Smithsonian Magazine, Old House Journal and nearly every daily newspaper between San Francisco and Aspen, from Washington State to the Mexican border. This publicity in turn led to many commissions with the rich and famous including Bette Midler and the Vice President of the United States in Washington, D.C. Zaffle has taught at UC Berkeley and at lots of other nifty and prestigious places. Zaffle has been a member of the International Decorative Artisans League since 1993, a member of Artistic License of San Francisco since 1982, a member of the Salon since 2000 and a member of Faux Effects International’s 'Meeting of the Masters' since its inception.
