Fair Isle Cardigans with Beth Brown-Reinsel

Supplies to Bring: 4 colors worsted weight WOOL yarn (not Superwash), 2 to 3 oz. each, one set EACH sizes US 5 and 8 (3.75 mm and 5.0 mm) dp needles 7" or shorter (or two circs for Magic Loop), one 16" circular needle, size 8 (5.0 mm), optional: one 11 1/2" or 12" circular needle, size 5 (3.75 mm), tapestry needle, scissors, stitch holders, stitch markers, sticky notes or magnetic board to keep your place on the chart.
Description: The classic details and traditional construction of the Fair Isle sweaters will be taught in this two-day workshop through the circular knitting of a small cardigan. Techniques to be learned include choices of different corrugated ribbings, shaped and unshaped knitted steeks for two different armholes (shaped and drop shoulder), stranding and weaving, cutting steeks, picking up stitches for sleeves two different ways, underarm gussets, buttonbands, and finishing steeks. Discussion will include different pattern families (seeding, peerie, border, OXO, stars and all-over patterns) and designing a Fair Isle. Experience with double pointed needles and carrying a color in each hand is helpful.

Complete Finishing Course With Arenda Holladay

Supplies to Bring: Please bring a binder, sheet protectors(to store the labeled swatches with the provided reference materials), light colored worsted weight yarn and appropriately sized needles (to work buttonhole swatches in class, contrasting color worsted weight yarn (for seaming), tapestry needle and scissors, and homework.
Description: This two-day course addresses all areas of finishing: seams, bands and closures but it also will include a practical workshop. The first day and a half will involve practicing techniques on swatches while the final three hours will be devoted to an actual project. Students are encouraged to bring an actual project to apply what they have learned. If they do not have a project in mind, a simple pattern for a doll sweater will be included with the homework.

Yes, there will be lots of homework but when the course is complete, each attendee will have an extensive finishing reference notebook complete with samples. Attendees should bring a 1" binder, sheet protectors and tabs.

Specifically the course will discuss:

Seams:
- Vertical seams for specific stitch patterns (stockinette, reverse stockinette, seed and ribbing)
- Horizontal seams
- Stair step seams
- Combined seams (horizontal and vertical)

Bands:
- Picking up stitches along a vertical edge
- Picking up stitches along a horizontal edge
- Picking up stitches along a curved edge
- Ratios for picking up stitches
- I-cord bands
- Simple crochet edge

Closures:
- Buttonholes
- Zippers
- Ties and loops

Homework will be available with registration. If the attendee does not have a project they wish to use for the workshop, a simple pattern for a doll sweater will be provided. Should attendees not wish to do the homework swatches, they can be purchased from the instructor for $75 with one month's notice.
